“The Colour Out of Space” is a sci-fi/ horror short story by the pioneer of existential cosmic horror H.P Lovecraft. Written in 1927, the short story follows an unnamed narrator piecing together the history of an area known as “blasted heath”, in the wild hills of Arkham, Massachusetts. The narrator discovers that many years ago a meteorite crashed there, causing mass poisoning, foul vegetation and a force driving all wildlife into rabid creatures that morph into deformed and grotesque shapes…oh also all the citizens of this area start going insane and dying one by one!
Nicolas Cage and Joely Richardson star in Richard Stanley’s adaptation, in which they play a “family whose recent retreat to rural life is quickly disrupted by a meteorite that crashes in their front yard.”
“The Gardners’ peaceful escape quickly becomes a hallucinatory prison, as an extraterrestrial organism contaminates the farmstead, infecting everything and everyone it can.”
From the mind of H.P. Lovecraft, TIFF describes the film as a cosmic nightmare.
It also stars Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer, Julian Hilliard, Elliot Knight, Q’orianka Kilcher, and even Tommy Chong.
